Being indomitable sometimes means being careful and protecting the groups and organizations you cherish and may be a part of.
I was part of an intense meeting last night where the bill above was discussed at length. We were all advised that this is the first of our government's many attempts to silence those who oppose and criticize the government. As someone who has worked as a journalist and has a concentration in journalism, I believe freedom of speech is everything. One of my favorite sayings has always been, "I may not agree with what you say, but I will die to defend your right to say it."
Yet, it is more important than freedom of speech to understand that freedom is a symbiotic relationship. When freedom is constricted or removed for any group, the constriction of freedom is universal. It reflects the comprehensive way in which we are connected. As freedoms fall for one group, they slowly begin to fall for all groups. There is no stopping authoritarianism's reach to restrict and control. To support authoritative governing bodies is to help your diminishing future freedom.
I am straddling lines of association, membership, and ministry. I have to understand that I am an ordained minister through Circle Sanctuary and am also ordained by Willow Dragonstone Community & Coven. I am a member of Gwinnett Interfaith Alliance. I want to join a new group, Georgia Interfaith Power & Light (an eco-activism interfaith coalition). I am joining the ACLU. I have to be conscious that what I say could be construed as a statement of belief or opinion by these groups. Enter the disclaimer at the top of this page.
